in this, i guess what will be a battle down in washington? >> well, anderson, you and i were at grace mcdonnell's funeral today, and you saw the monsignor say at one point that he couldn't wait until these 40 parents were unleashed on washington, and he looked our way. i -- i think every parent is going to take their own time to figure out whether they want to be part of this process of change and what they believe the change should be. but i have a feeling that the majority of these parents are going to be marching on washington. are going to be demanding change, whether it be more help for the mentally ill or developmentally disabled or stricter gun control, and they're going to be the best spokesman for this issue because they want to make sure that these 20 kids' memory doesn't just vanish from the scene. there's something good that can come from this, and once the grieving process is over, i do think we're going to have one of the most powerful lobbying forces that this country has ever seen in the parents and relatives of those that were killed last friday. >> senator-elect chris m

signs that was going to happen, nothing was getting done. in a cnn/crc poll, 67% said washington officials would behave like spoiled children in the fiscal cliff discussions. only 28% said they would behave like adults. tonight signs that maybe some adult behavior might be prevail and a compromise might be reached. jessica yellen joins us, dana bash and david gergen. what's the latest? >> reporter: they are a long way from a deal, but late today speaker boehner and president obama did speak to one another on the phone. now, this is an important development because it's the first time they've talked in a week about the fiscal cliff. i am told, though, that there was no real progress in negotiations. in this sense there was no breakthrough on that central point of tax rates. as you know, president obama insists there is no deal unless the gop agrees to raise rates on the top 2% of earners. the gop says that's a nonstarter and the two men have not moved from that basic position. now, all of this quomz comes at the same time treasury secretary geithner also said for the first time th

in washington. >>> some breaking news. late word that president obama will meet tomorrow with congressional leaders for one more shot at keeping the country from going over the fiscal cliff. before we get the latest on that, though, let's clear one thing up. everyone talks about the cliff as if it's simply materialized from out of the blue. keeping them honest, that is just not so. the package of drastic budget cuts and tax increases that go into effect tuesday morning are totally manmade and totally avoidable and all sides know it. it's a kind of legislative dooms day machine written by the men and women who work here and signed by president obama. the idea being to make it so painful not to cut a deal on taxes and spending that they would be forced to cut a deal on taxes and spending. except keeping them honest, they haven't done it. even though they knew the stakes, they knew the deadline, and both sides promised that this time things would be different. >> we need to return to fiscal responsibility. >> how is it that we're going to be able to do that? getting our fiscal house in order.

saw in that piece, they won't talk to us at all. the va in pittsburgh referred us to the washington pr division who sent us right back to pittsburgh. it's been a mess. but the centers for disease control and prevention, they did send a team there in november to investigate this. we're told that the investigation, the results from the cdc will go to the va in the coming weeks. we're not sure if that's going to be released to the public. >> i still can't understand why the va did nothing when they knew they had a problem? >> actually, anderson, we found out that about six months ago the va did bring in a consultant who made recommendations on how to fix the water, but the va did not tell that consultant that they had legionnaire's cases at the hospital. if they had told the consultants that there would have been different recommendations. the va would have been told to handle it differently. we just don't know why, because the va won't talk to us. >> that's unbelievable. drew, appreciate it, thanks. >>> a cnn exclusive ahead. a truly breath-taking display of courage by a syrian teenager.

this being dropped in the senate's lap? >> randy, by washington standards, that is progress. and i know it's hard to believe but the fact that all these leaders left this meeting in agreement about the next step is a hopeful sign. the good news is that this could have been much worse. they could have come out of the meeting saying it's impossible to reach an agreement, we cannot even begin negotiation, there will be no deal. that did not happen. so the fact that they have a game plan for the weekend and for the next steps, it's better than a lot of people hoped for. so now everyone's holding their breath. >> i guess we have to be thankful for the little things. but how did we get here? we heard the president say today he's mildly optimistic. why? >> that optimism has to do with the fact that it could have been worse, that all the parties in there did want to get to a deal, that they would rather find a way out of this instead of going over the cliff, but the bigger picture is you said how did we get here and the problem is what they're fighting over, while it seems silly and petty right no
